A catechism (pronounced ˈcat-a-kizm’) is an education in the faith. It is a well-organized, systematic approach to teaching that has been used since New Testament times. The word itself comes from the Ancient Greek, κατηχισμός, and literally means “to sound down” (kata = “down” + echein = “to sound”). The traditional format poses a question and states an answer.
