The Confessions are thorough, organized statements of doctrine. Systematically organizing theological doctrine into Confessions was prominent during the 16th and 17th centuries, as European countries defined themselves religiously as well as politically and geographically.
The Confessions provide a framework for studying Scripture. It is important to understand that Confessions provide a historic viewpoint of doctrine. Although many have been revised over the years, their adherence to Biblical truth remains constant.
