Alternative Gift Ideas

The Advent and Christmas seasons are a time of giving.  Below you will find some suggestions for alternative gifts for those in need in our community and world.

Heifer International Project – Heifer offers the opportunity to purchase different types of animals and plants that will enable the hungry in our nation and around the world to have food and to have a source of income.

Micah Hospitality – This organization, sponsored by the downtown churches and some others, provides a place on Princess Anne Street for the homeless and poor to get a shower, wash clothes, find clothes, help with job applications, permanent housing, and much more.  The Cold Night Shelter, the community dinners and other projects are coordinated by the Center.  You may donate a sleeping bag, men & women’s underwear, socks,     t-shirts, deodorant, soap, toothbrushes, toothpaste or make a monetary contribution through the church.

Presbyterian Disaster Assistance – A donation to PDA through the church will be a way for you to reach out to the people in the Philippines, Hurricane Sandy vicitms and other places that have been hit hard by natural disasters.  PDA also goes into communities that have been touched by violence.

The Food Pantry – You may bring food items or make a donation to our Food Pantry that is open Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., and/or volunteer to help give out food.  Contact Wayne Hibbeler, hibbelerw@gmail.com, or Marsha Luckett, luckett@juno.com.  The specific food items given by the pantry are:  packages of oatmeal, packages of nonfat dry milk, peanut butter, jelly, tuna or other canned meat, dry spaghetti or pasta, spaghetti sauce, canned soup, canned meals (stew, ravioli), canned vegetables and fruit, boxes of raisins, jars of apple sauce, canned beans for chili, canned diced tomatoes, chili seasoning mix, and 16 oz packages rice.

Community Dinner – Our community dinner is the 3rd Saturday of the month.  Volunteer to help prepare or serve food at the dinner.  You can also make an apple or pumpkin pie or other food for the dinner.

Angel Tree – Our Senior High Youth Group is asking the congregation to help provide Christmas for children and youth in the city of Fredericksburg.  Be on the lookout for the youth after the worship service beginning the first Sunday of Advent, December 1.  Gifts must be returned by December 18.
